Project Summary

This Magistrates Court is a new building for the Department of Justice, in Hankey, in the Eastern Cape. The project required the design and planning response to a complicated brief, and was further challenged by the site being too small for the accommodation.

The two Magistrates Courts are connected to the public via a large central concourse, which also forms the link to the courts for the many administrative support offices. The magistrates themselves access the courts independently, with parking and detainee facilities located in the basement.

The success of this project led to Design Scape's Durban office winning the contract for the renovation for the Durban High Court, a R200 million project.
