Umhlanga 175

A steep site with awesome views. Frequent on & offshore winds. Lengthy accommodation requirements. Complex family specifics. Restrictive estate guidelines…
Project Summary

These were some of the forces pulling at the primary design objective, which was to create an architectural object, metaphorically reaching out to the morning Sun and the horizon line beyond. Celebrating the glorious, subtropical Durban weather & the beauty of an expansive sea.

Large houses can be alienating and oppositional to the core intent…..that of fostering healthy family life. Solution: – to attempt design elements with a sense of dynamic dialogue; strong visual links with vistas and parts that appear to open naturally to its environment. To carefully fragment mass, reduce scale and allow the users to engage subconsciously with the form.

This project provided for an awesome design exploration of form making, architectural, structural and technological integration.

A minimal dependence on municipal utilities has been achieved. Rainwater is collected, stored, filtered and completely reused. Energy usage is wholly dependent on solar until grid supply is warranted.
