Introduction
We are grateful for the opportunity to share our insights on “Contemporary Cape Vernacular” architecture and offer a glimpse into some of the work we have undertaken in this genre. We have curated deep experience in designing distinguished residential buildings, including both contemporary and modern interpretations of Cape Vernacular.
This compendium aims to elucidate the attractiveness and breadth of this architectural style. Beginning with a brief historical context, we then move to examples of our work that embody the style and conclude with an exploration of the key design features that define this unique architectural language.
History
For more than three centuries, the Cape vernacular has endured as a cherished tradition; its deep connection to place, technology, and culture shaping it over time. Its visual language echoes stories in gabled roofs, thick whitewashed walls and symmetrical facades. Over time, it has evolved, and today’s Contemporary Cape Vernacular can be a replicative or interpretive form. We strive for an attenuative approach that mediates between these two forms.
This style has been historically influenced by the Dutch/German rural tradition, the Khoi-Khoi, the British Georgian period, Arts and Crafts and, more recently, via leading architects in the 1950s and 60s.
Architects have translated the Cape Vernacular into a seminal domestic architectural variant. These buildings speak to the past while meeting the demands of modern living and environmental concerns.

We embrace minimalism while respecting the expressive qualities of Cape Vernacular, focusing on clean lines and the interplay of space and light. Our flexible layouts adapt to modern family dynamics, where work and home life often blend. The design program is also influenced by the terrain and its topography, forming a mutually beneficial aesthetic between the surroundings and building.
Cape Vernacular Variations
Cape Vernacular can be interpreted in two distinct ways, both of which we explore in our work. The first approach incorporates the traditional gable ends and pitched roofs, adapting them to meet modern needs. The second, contemporary option extrapolates the roof angle into a mono-pitched roof interpretation, regrounded into the traditional style with features such as chimneys and stoops.
Both interpretations reflect our commitment to innovation within tradition, and our portfolio below includes examples of these timeless yet relevant houses.
